EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS - European Film Academy (EFA) Berlin, Germany

December 3, 2005 - WINNERS ANNOUNCED! Cache ("Hidden"), featuring videotapes, obsession and the pain of facing up to one's past, swept the 18th European Film Awards Saturday. Directed by Michael Haneke, the film won six awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor.

Many critics felt
Cache, starring Daniel Auteuil as a TV presenter and Juliette Binoche as his wife, should have won the prestigious Palme d'Or it was nominated for at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but the prize eventually went to the Dardenne brothers' L'Enfant.

The EFA have yet to gain the prestige of high-profile European film festivals like Cannes, Venice and Berlin, but the awards are widely respected in the film industry and sometimes seen as Europe's equivalent to the Oscars
®. Forty-seven films were judged by 1,600 European Film Academy (EFA) members representing a broad spectrum of the industry, but the highlight may have been Scottish actor Sean Connery, receiving a lifetime achievement award.

The Best Non-European film category was won by "Good Night, And Good Luck" directed by George Clooney, and Best Composer went to Rupert Gregson-Williams and Andrea Guerra for "Hotel Rwanda."

French composer Maurice Jarre received the European Achievement in World Cinema prize from the EFA. The father of French pop musician Jean-Michel Jarre wrote music for more than 170 films, amid them David Lean's epic sagas including "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago," and has won three Oscars
® for his work.

WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA (WGA)

Saturday, February 19, 2005 - WINNERS ANNOUNCED! <http://www.wga.org/>

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Sideways won the screenplay awards.

Eternal Sunshine (Charlie Kaufman), a quirky love story about two people trying to erase their memories of each other, won best original screenplay. Sideways (Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, based on the Rex Pickett novel), the road trip romp through Southern California's wine country that charmed critics and audiences alike, won best adapted screenplay.

Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" won long-form adapted writing for television for Kushner's HBO teleplay, which was based on his play. The long-form original writing award went to Peter Silverman and Robert Caswell for HBO's "Something the Lord Made."

It complicates handicapping the Academy Awards when a movie wins a WGA's screenplay award, and that movie is not nominated for Best Picture. Usually, a movie doesn't win an Oscar unless it wins for screenplay and/or director. This win for Sideways, and none for The Aviator, lessens the chances for The Aviator to win Best Picture.

Thursday, January 13, 2005 -
SCREENPLAY NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAYS: John Logan - The Aviator; Charlie Kaufman - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; Zach Braff - Garden State; Keir Pearson and Terry George - Hotel Rwanda; and Bill Condon - Kinsey.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAYS: Paul Haggis -
Million Dollar Baby (F.X. Toole's collection Rope Burns); Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor - Sideways (Rex Pickett's novel); Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke - Before Sunset (based on characters Linklater and Kim Krizan created for their film Before Sunrise); Tina Fey - Mean Girls (Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes); and Jose Rivera for the Che Guevara road-trip adventure The Motorcycle Diaries (based on memoirs by Guevara and traveling companion Alberto Granado).

Finding Neverland is ineligible. Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, will compete in a separate documentary category, and the prize will be awarded in a separate guild ceremony. Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" won the guild's 2002 original screenplay honor. See links below for more.
