60th PRIMETIME EMMY® AWARDS (ATAS/NATAS®)

SUNDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER 2008

Broadcasting live on ABC from the NOKIA Theatre, Staples Center, Los Angeles (8:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT).

AWARDS PRESENTED!

To download the list of winners go to: http://cdn.emmys.tv/awards/primetimeawards.php.

This year they broke the EMMY awards into three parts: Creative Arts (Saturday, 23 September), Primetime (Sunday, 21 September) and News and Documentary (Monday, 22 September). With such a confusing mess, it is no wonder that this year's Primetime Emmy Awards was the lowest rated show in Emmy history. They didn't even broadcast the News and Documentary Awards.

They did broadcast the 2008 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, Los Angeles, on E, but not until Saturday, September 20. By them, everyone knew the results (the ceremony was held on the 13th) so, like the ALMA awards, why watch? Those of us smart enough not to pay for the junk on TV, couldn't see the Creative Arts, anyway. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) hosted.

A 1960s advertising agency, a fictional sketch-comedy show and the second president of the United States were among the big winners at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards' Diamond Anniversary event, which handed out 28 awards. HBO topped the night with 10 winged statuettes. NBC followed with four, all going to '30-Rock' (Two for Tina Fey as outstanding writer of a comedy series and best actress in a comedy series, plus the show won one for best comedy series (Tina Fey, executive producer) and one went to Alex Baldwin for best actor in a comedy series.) - - a clean sweep. It was definitely Tina Fey's night!

Combined with its awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, HBO led for the year as well, with 26 in all. ABC was second with 12, and CBS, NBC, and PBS tied for third with 10 each.

One thing I was very happy about was that HBO’s seven-part historical miniseries 'John Adams', won 13 Emmys, including best mini series or movie, best actress and actor leads in a mimi series or a movie for Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti as Abigail and John Adams, plus best supporting actor in same to Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin. Tom Hanks was the executive producer.

It surpassed a miniseries record set by another HBO production, 'Angels in America', which won 11 in 2004, and ABC’s 'Eleanor and Franklin', which won 11 in 1976. All three, with all the episodes, are available on DVD. I got 'John Adam' two weeks before the Emmy Awards. It should be required viewing in every class in every middle and high school, and every college class, undergraduate and graduate in the USA and territories! Click for the NETFLIX link to rent them.

The show was one of milestones and memories. Among the September 21 ceremony’s firsts: the Primetime Emmys’ debut in their stunning new venue, NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, in downtown Los Angeles, and an Emmy was awarded for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. Jeff Probst won (Survivor).

Some presenters for the Emmy's Diamond Jubilee included Christina Applegate, Candice Bergen, David Boreanaz, Wayne Brady, Lauren Conrad, Jimmy Kimmel, Kiefer Sutherland, America Ferrera, Laurence Fishburne, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Hayden Panettiere, William Petersen and Vanessa Williams.

Desperate Housewives’ Marcia Cross, Dana Delany, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria Parker and Nicollette Sheridan presented together, as did Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) and Old Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus); plus Tina Fey & Amy Poehler.

PRIMETIME NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED!

Here are some (winner):

Outstanding Comedy Series: Curb Your Enthusiasm - HBO; Entourage - HBO; The Office - NBC; 30 Rock - NBC; Two And A Half Men - CBS.

Outstanding Drama Series: Boston Legal - ABC; Damages - FX; Dexter - Showtime; House - FOX; Lost - ABC; Mad Men - Lionsgate - AMC.

Outstanding Made For Television Movie: Bernard And Doris - HBO; Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale - HBO, BBC; The Memory Keeper's Daughter - Lifetime; A Raisin In The Sun - ABC; Recount - HBO.

Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series: The Colbert Report - Comedy Central; The Daily Show With Jon Stewart - Comedy Central; Late Show With David Letterman - CBS; Real Time With Bill Maher - HBO; Saturday Night Live - NBC.

NEW CATEGORY - Outstanding "Reality" Show Hosts: They are: Tom Bergeron, "Dancing With the Stars"; Ryan Seacrest, "American Idol"; Howie Mandel, "Deal or No Deal"; Heidi Klum, "Project Runway"; Jeff Probst, "Survivor".

Bergeron, Seacrest, Mandel, Klum, and Probst will share the hosting duties for the EMMY broadcast on ABC, 21 September. I do not waste my time watching "reality" shows and this year, I may not waste my time watching the Emmy broadcast, either. Addendum: I watched the last half.

AWARDS PRESENTED!

The Daytime Creative Arts and Entertainment Emmy® Awards were presented at a black-tie ceremony on Friday, 13 June, at the Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Time Warner Building, NYC.

There were almost as many hosts and presenters as audience members, and too many awards with too many recipients to post them here. So read all about it by clicking here.

Remember Zarf (actor Jeffrey Carlson), the resident transsexual on ALL MY CHILDREN? He was nominated for his original song, "The Me Inside," but two songs from ONE LIFE TO LIVE (ABC) won: "Chemistry," Lance Horne (composer, lyricist), Paul S. Glass (lyricist); and "Little Starr," Kevin Briody (composer, lyricist).

35th DAYTIME EMMY® AWARDS

FRIDAY, 20 JUNE 2008
Live from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre

ABC-TV, 8:00 p.m., ET.

AWARDS PRESENTED!

ONE LIFE TO LIVE'S writing and directing teams won in both categories for daytime drama, but when it came to outstanding daytime drama, for which the show was also nominated, GENERAL HOSPITAL walked away with the golden lady. However, adding the four won at the Creative Daytime Awards gala (hair styling and lighting for drama, and two original songs) on the 13th, ONE LIFE TO LIVE received the most EMMYS overall. See above for song titles.

Neither OPRAH nor THE VIEW received a single award, but each did win 2 awards at the Creative Daytime Awards. OPRAH won for lighting direction and technical direction (electronic camera / video) for a talk show. THE VIEW won for hair styling and special-class writing for a talk show. A paltry showing for both.

The gala show was snappy, more glamorous, and the seating at the tables was extra nice, but 30 minutes in and my ears were ringing from Sherri Shepherd's incessant high-pitch shouting. How did Cameron Mathison stand it for two hours? Please, give us a break next year. Either teach her to talk at a lower pitch and not shout, or get someone else. Please!

ALMA AWARDS, NCLR

~ ~ FRIDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER, ABC, 8:00 p.m., EDT ~ ~

A presentation of the National Council of La Raza (National Council of Workers). NCLR, is the largest national Hispanic - Latino civil rights and advocacy group in the America. Alma is the Spanish word for spirit, or soul, and ALMA is an acronym for American Latino Media Arts.

They say this is their 10th, but that is a misnomer. National Hispanic, or Latino, awards in the arts were first given by NOSOTROS, an organization founded by Ricardo Montalbán in the late 1970s, who also partnered with La Raza. Nosotros means "we" in Spanish, and Montalbán prefers the term "Hispanic" over Latino as Hispanic refers to roots in Spain. Of course, he prefers that because his parents were born in Spain. However, all new inhabitants of the New World from 1400 were once Hispanic in origin.

La Raza took over NOSOTROS in the early 90s, and christened the awards, Bravo Awards. Since 1995, they have been known as the NCLR ALMA Awards.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

September is Hispanic Heritage Month, and the NCLA Alma Awards show is the official start of the celebrations.

The two-hour television special with pay tribute to actress America Ferrera, fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez, singer/ songwriter Shakira and something special for singer Linda Ronstadt. The executive producers are Michael Levitt, Janet Murguía (also, President and CEO of La Raza), Eva Longoria Parker, and David Chavez. Parker will again host the show. She said on "The View" that she will change her dress at least 10 times. All dresses are designed by Latinos(as).

Some of the stars you can expect to see incude Paula Abdul, Jessica Alba, Helio Castroneves, Placido Domingo, the Cheetah Girls, Cristian de la Fuente, Oscar de la Hoya, Zac Efron, Terrence Howard, Wynonna Judd, MARIO, Carlos Mencia, Edward James Olmos, Roselyn Sanchez, Ryan Seacrest, Charlie Sheen, Ashley Tisdale, and Will.I.Am.

NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED: Mostly the ususal suspects, but there may be a couple of surprises. NOMINATIONS (.pdf) Of course, the show was actually taped 17 August at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium (CA), so maybe not. The results are posted on their Official Web site.

But wait. You may want to catch the performances by The Cheetah Girls, Sergio Mendes and the Black Eyed Peas, and Selena Gomez with Stars from High School Musical.
